Abstract: In this talk we will start with a few motivational anecdotes to illustrate the power of the collective in humans. We will introduce the idea of using the cognitive surplus in creating computing environments to harness the potential of 'wisdom of many'. While portals such as Wikipedia, Quora, Youtube, Stackoverflow illustrate the significance of the amateur contributions, beyond their present usage, there is hope that the datasets collected from these portals have a lot more to offer. It is believed that these datasets give us explosive hints towards understanding the science and philosophy of knowledge building in general.
