Abstract:

Sociology was established as an academic discipline in India during the late colonial period and developed rapidly after independence with the growth of the university system and the funding of research institutions. unlike anthropology, which was introduced into the country primarily as an adjunct of the colonial state, sociology retained from its inception a degree of autonomy.
