Abstract: In a research ethics class I attended last year, Prof. Anitha Kurup, who heads the Education Programme at NIAS, posed scholars an interesting question: why are collaborations more prevalent in natural sciences as compared to social sciences, especially when it comes to academic publishing? For someone who has straddled both sciences and social sciences, it ignited a chain of questions, the answers to which metamorphosed into the idea of holding a Wednesday talk on the same.  A cursory look and comparative analysis of the literature coming out in natural sciences and social sciences reveals that collaborations (multiple co-authorship) are more prevalent in the former. But, then, the question is, why? Are collaborations more difficult to come about in social sciences?

This talk is going to be somewhat different from the usual Wednesday talks. It will be discussion based, where the speaker will set the context with introductory address and then assume the role of a moderator. The esteemed audience (or rather discussants and participants) will be asked a set of questions on the theme of collaboration. This will help answer the ‘why’ question posed above. This will also help uncover the challenges faced by scholars from both camps and thereby aid in a comparative analysis of the same. Lastly, given the multidisciplinary nature of the participants, it will also further conversations across disciplinary silos, which will in turn help both camps appreciate each other's concerns.

About the speaker: Lokendra Sharma is a first year PhD scholar in the School of Conflict and Security Studies at NIAS. He is working with Prof D Suba Chandran on the topic of Technology and International Relations for his doctoral research.
