About the Speaker: Padmashree Darshan Shankar is the managing trustee of Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT), Bangalore, and Former Advisor to Member (Health) of the Planning Commission. He is currently the Vice Chancellor of the TransDisciplinary University (TDU), Bangalore. Prof. Darshan Shankar has extensively worked in the areas of decentralization, revitalization of community health practices based on traditional knowledge, ‘experimental learning programme’, and rural development initiatives across India. He was a consultant to the Office of Advisor to Prime Minister for inputs on National Technology Mission on Health.
Prof. Darshan Shankar has several publications to his credit. He has been conferred with Commonwealth Youth Service Award in 1976 for designing and implementing the best educational project in the Commonwealth for linking University education to community needs. In 1998, he was awarded ‘Norman Borlaug’ Award for contributions to promoting conservation of wild populations of medicinal plants. In 2002, he received the Equator Initiative Prize by the United Nations. In 2003, the Columbia University’s Centre for Complementary & Alternative Medicines International Award went to Darshan Shankar & FRLHT, in recognition of FRLHT’s outstanding contributions to revitalization of traditional systems of health-care in India. The government of India conferred him the Padma Shri in 2011.
